• consecutive interpreting: during consecutive interpreting, the speaker and the interpreter take turns. The speaker says a few sentences and then pauses while the interpreter renders their speech in the target language. Consecutive interpreting is suitable for, for example, short welcoming speeches or speeches by foreign guests, which need to be interpreted for a large audience which speaks the same language (short because by its nature, this kind of interpreting almost doubles the length of the speech); it is usually necessary to make sure that the interpreter has a microphone. Consecutive interpreting is also widely used during business meetings of two parties or for accompanying a foreign client at offices, doctor’s, etc. Another large domain is also the interpreting of work training, for example in factories, where it’s difficult to ensure interpreting equipment (and also because such training is often bilateral in nature – the participants can ask the trainer questions, etc.).
• simultaneous interpreting in the booth: interpreting is done from the booth in real time (simultaneously with the speaker). Before the start of the event, users of interpreting will be given headsets, i.e., a receiver and headphones, into which the translated version is transmitted. This type of interpreting is suitable especially in the case of long speeches (e.g., during conferences with foreign participation, where it’s not viable to double the length of the speeches for temporal reasons. This kind of interpreting is also suitable if the listeners can speak different languages – for example, a half of the audience understands the foreign language used (and therefore, only the other half requires interpreting) or if the audience includes multiple nationalities (e.g., Slovaks, Polish and Hungarian speakers who don’t all speak English – if the conference language is English). In this case, it is necessary to have a separate booth for all languages and the listeners can choose the language they want to hear through their headsets. For simultaneous interpreting, it is, of course necessary to ensure the equipment as well.
• simultaneous interpreting by whispering (chuchotage): this kind of interpreting is suitable if there is only a small group of foreign participants who don’t understand the language spoken at the event. In an ideal situation, this group consists of no more than two or three people. Although it is technically possible to provide whispering interpreting for a group of four or five people, one needs to realise that during chuchotage, the interpreter sits very closely to the listeners and whispers in their ears – this means that the bigger the group, the louder the interpreter has to speak, which may disturb the rest of the audience and it also makes the interpreter’s job more difficult, since they usually don’t have any headphones available and have to focus all of their attention on the speaker’s words, while speaking at the same time. Whispering is also demanding for the interpreter’s vocal cords and therefore, it is not suitable for all-day events.
• remote (online) simultaneous interpreting:this type of simultaneous interpreting became widely used during the COVID-19 pandemic, when it was necessary to restrict large numbers of people from meeting in person for safety reasons. In principle, it is the as simultaneous interpreting in a booth, except that the interpreter(s) (as even in this case a pair of interpreters is needed from a certain length of the event) interprets from home. Today, there are many video conferencing platforms that make it possible, with just a couple of clicks, to integrate interpretation into a meeting. Meeting participants then choose which language channel they want to listen to. This type of interpretation is suitable for any number of participants – from small, bilateral meetings to large conferences.
